Tuesday 8 December

Had a walk on to the lower burgh.
This area has been cleared, a small stone pyramid as been uncovered there are a few of these around the park and area, I believe they show the mine shaft locations.

The dogs have plenty of patience.

  1. Wow! Is your hogweed Heracleum mantegazzianum, the one you shouldn't touch? The flowers don't look right, but I haven't seen ours in bloom up close.

    And... the harts tongue fern is very rare here. I got to see some on a special tour for a restricted group once. Very cool.

  2. We do have Heracleum mantegazzianum in the valley we call it Giant Hogweed and as you say it's untouchable , the one in the photo is one of our most common umbelifers Heracleum sphondylium and I have never had any rash from touching it, it is sometimes called cow parsnip.
    Hart's Tongue is a lovely fern it seems to like this area as we have plenty growing so I never think of it as rare, yet I know that it is a rarity in some areas.
