Friday 18 July

Easy one to ID the leaves are distinctive from first show - the plant is still used in herbal medicine and a black dye can also be produced from it.

Gypsywort - Lycopus europaeus

  1. Well, we have Lycopus americanus. Several others, but that one has the deeply cut leaves. Never heard about the dye thing. Wonder if ours can be used that way.

  2. I guess they all can be used for dye. Found a reprint of an 1830 manual that talks about it. Have to use sulfuric acid to bring out the dye.
